This high alpha variety was bred in 1980 at the Hüll Hop Research Center in Germany and is known for its extremely large and heavy cones. Magnum is best utilized as an early boil addition, as its smooth, efficient bittering is ideal for a wide variety of beer styles. Though not known as an aroma variety, Magnum can produce subtle spicy, floral, and resinous flavors with a touch of citrus when added late in the boil.
