Brewer’s Gold originated in the UK more than 100 years ago and sported traditional UK hop aromas such as black currant, spice, and lemon zest. Over its rich history, its family line birthed many contemporary hop varieties, including Citra, Magnum, Centennial, Nugget, Chinook, and Sorachi Ace. After falling out of favor among modern brewers, this hop is in the midst of a small renaissance in the US thanks to a partnership between CLS Farms and Russian River. This American-grown Brewer’s Gold is picked much later in the season, and the Yakima Valley terroir imparts prominent stone fruit, bright citrus, and resin notes, with the black currant and spice of previous generations fading deep into the background. Use as a late-addition hop in hazy IPAs and Belgian–style ales for best results.
